The dynamite tree is fast-growing and can reach 60 m in height. It has a remarkable mechanism for seed dispersal.

The fruits are pumpkin-shaped capsules about 5-8 cm wide. When they are completely ripe, they open explosively and eject their seeds with a speed of 150 km/h. Hence the nickname, 'the dynamite tree'.

The dynamite tree contains a poisonous milky sap that has been used as a fish poison in the Amazon and to make arrow poison in the Caribbean.
