These years, the botanical systematics are undergoing changes. Botanists are increasingly using molecular data when studying how plants are related. Previously, scientists based their studies on the morphology of the plants.
Bluebell is one of the plant groups that has been affected by new data. Many of the species that were previously placed in the genus Squill (Scilla), are now moved to the genus Bluebell (Hyacinthoides).
In Denmark, you will especially find the Italian bluebell in old gardens. It resembles the common bluebell but has more open flowers with a nice bristle-like style.
Italian bluebell blooms in April and May. The flowers smell of nectar and attract pollinating insects.
