Lotus-leaved maidenhair fern
Lotus-leaved maidenhair fern is recognizable due to its almost circular leaves.
Lotus-leaved maidenhair fern is easily recognizable due to its almost circular leaves. On the underside of the leaves, the propagating organs of the plant, the spores, are formed under a flap of the leaf margin.
The plant has a peculiar distribution. It is found both on the Canary Islands in the Atlantic Ocean and in eastern Africa and Madagascar
This distribution can be explained by the fact that millions of years ago, the species was growing across Africa, but it disappeared from most of the area as the climate became drier, and the Sahara spread over the northern part of Africa.
