In Greek mythology, myrtle was a sacred plant for Aphrodite, the goddess of love and the same goddess as Venus in Roman mythology. Myrtle has therefore been considered a symbol of love and fertility throughout Europe.

Myrtle is especially closely associated with weddings. The bride carries myrtle leaves attached to the bridal veil or wedding dress, and myrtle is included in the bridal bouquet.

The myrtle that was part of Crown Princess Mary's bridal bouquet came from an old myrtle plant at Fredensborg Castle, which Queen Ingrid had brought with her from her childhood home in Stockholm.
