Paperflower is so widely cultivated in the Mediterranean area that for many people it is the symbol of holiday in southern Europe.

The plant, however, originates from a completely different place, namely South America. It was introduced in Europe in the early 1800s, where it quickly gained popularity due to its attractive violet or red leaves enclosing the small pale yellow flowers.

The coloured leaves help attract pollinating insects. They remain after flowering is over, and in time they become pale and papery, giving the plant its English name paperflower.
