Tajinaste azul is only found on the island of Gran Canaria, and it is one of many examples of species that are found on the Canary Islands and nowhere else in the world.

Today there are only 8 small populations of tajinaste azul left on Gran Canaria. It is therefore registered as "vulnerable" on the International Red List of Endangered Species, a list made by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).

The biggest threat to tajinaste azul is that its habitats are being overgrown by a bush of non-native species such as blackberries and giant reed (Arundo donax).
