Coffee is the world’s favourite beverage and internationally the most valuable commodity after oil.

The Danes drink an average 3.4 cups of coffee a day. Denmark is 4th in the ranks of coffee-drinking nations, surpassed only by Iceland, Norway and Finland. Every fifth cup of coffee consumed in Denmark is instant coffee. Especially women east of the Great Belt drink instant coffee.

When making instant coffee, strong coffee is brewed first. The coffee is evaporated to a viscous concentrate, which is frozen and ground to granulate. The frozen coffee granulate is dried in a vacuum of 0.5 mbar. At such a low pressure, ice evaporates without turning into water. Both the taste and the structure are retained.

When the fruits of the coffee bush are ripe and ready to be harvested, they turn red. Each fruit contains two seeds. The seeds, which are called beans, are roasted, ground and used for coffee brewing.

Coffee originates from the Ethiopian highlands but is now grown in more than 70 countries.
