Feijoa

Feijoa – the tree with the most beautiful flowers and even more delicate fruits

[Translate to English:] Feijoa - Feijoa sellowiana
[Translate to English:] Feijoa – træet med de smukke blomster og endnu skønnere frugter

In Denmark, feijoa fruits are virtually unknown, and that’s a shame, because the ripe fruits have a fantastic flavor, somewhat like a mix of strawberry and pineapple.

The ripe fruits are green and about the size of a hen’s egg. Only the flesh is eaten—similar to how one eats a kiwi. The feijoa fruit is also used in fruit salads, for ice cream, juice, and jam.

For many years, it was only the local population in South America who picked the fruit for their own use, but now it is cultivated in places like New Zealand, the USA, and Israel. Feijoa fruits are sold almost exclusively where they are produced because they taste best when fully ripe and quickly become overripe. Additionally, they are easily damaged, which makes them difficult to transport.

Feijoa has beautiful red flowers, and the plant is well-suited for conservatories in Denmark.
