Licorice ginger
Many of the species in the ginger family have a culinary use; this one has a strong scent of licorice.
Licorice ginger has red inflorescences with small white and dark red flowers.
The inflorescences are quite short and emerge at the base of the plant. Try to rub your fingers gently on an inflorescence and smell them – they have a surprisingly strong scent of licorice.
There are hundreds of species in the ginger family, and many have a culinary use. Among the most well-known are ginger, turmeric and cardamom.
