Peach palm - Bactris gasipaes - in the tropical house of the Greenhouses.

The peach palm is one of the most commonly cultivated palms in tropical South America where it grows next to almost every house in the rainforest.

The palm is grown especially for its edible fruits that are rich in vitamin A and constitute an important food source. However, before the fruits can be eaten, they must first be boiled for 3-5 hours.

The peach palm is also grown in large plantations for its edible heart of palm. The heart of the palm is the growing bud of the palm and is hidden between the leaves. It can be eaten raw or preserved with citric acid in glass jars or tins.

Most of the heart of palm sold in Denmark comes from plantations of peach palm.
