Time-lapse: Watch as the large leaves of the Victoria water lily (Victoria cruziana) unfurl in the pond in the Tropical House. It has a fascinating network of sharp spikes on the underside of the leaves, perhaps as a defense against plant-eating fish and manatees. A fully grown leaf can reach up to 2.5 meters in diameter and support a child (up to about 45 kg).
